Just bought a new van for carpet cleaning business from Savvy Auto Sales. This business is owned by a nice couple who sells cars out of their home. They told me they got rid of the lot to give better deals to the customers without the high pressure sales people. They were really nice and easy to work with. I got a very low mileage van for half the price of a new van, and the van looks brand new. They even dropped off the van to me in Vancouver with a full tank of gas! I highly recommend them to anyone and hope to work with them in the future.

Let me be clear: this is not buyer's remorse. I still very much want this car—but now I have to deal with these issues that were originally covered up. Look, if something would have gone wrong a few months down the line—say, a transmission issue or other unpredictable problem—I would have certainly understood; it is a used car, after all. But that's not what happened here. No, it is clear that there was a concerted effort to hide rust.

Well, not exactly...

Last month, two days before Christmas, I purchased a 2004 Toyota from Marcy and Steve, the owners of Savvy Auto Sales. Roughly 100 miles after driving off their lot, the lights on the dash lit up like a Christmas tree. Because of the holiday, I waited until the following Monday to bring the vehicle to a high-quality independent Toyota mechanic. Thankfully, the lights were only a speed-sensor issue, which is an easy fix. No problem, right?

You see, when I retrieved the vehicle from my mechanic, he had fixed the speed-sensor issue, but before I left, he made sure to point out the vehicle's undercarriage, specifically the exhaust, which has been painted extensively to hide a substantial amount of rust. Of course some of the paint burned off during my drive from Oregon (which I now notice because the burning-paint smell during long drives is horrendous), and so now the rust is easy to see. There's also an exhaust leak near the rear muffler that was painted over and needs to be fixed.

I contacted Marcy and Steve via email and phone, and although it was clear that they knew about the rust cover-up, they were unwilling to help me resolve my grievance. I was told, "If you hate the car, you should sell it." What?! Well, I don't hate the car (I can replace the rusted exhaust). No, what I hate is being misled, misinformed, misguided.

Suffice it to say, I feel like I've been hoodwinked. When I asked whether there was anything I needed to know—any problems I needed to be made aware of—I was fervently told, "No, there are no known issues." I trusted Marcy and Steve, especially after being told about the "thorough inspection" that they do all their vehicles, and now I feel as though I've been taken advantage of.
